Unidentified Pink Sludge on Remote Tasmanian Beach Spurs Concerns of Likely Phytoplankton Proliferation
Authorities in Tasmania are working to identify a pink slime that has appeared on a remote shoreline, with a number of researchers worried it could be an phytoplankton proliferation.
Widespread Occurrence Along Beaches
The pink-tinged sludge appeared along a section of a coastal area about 37 miles south of the capital. A comparable ooze has also been recorded on parts of Little Roaring Beach and Little Taylors Bay.
Samples Gathered for Analysis
Specimens have been gathered and provided to the Environment Protection Authority for testing. A spokesperson remarked that "algae outbreaks are a natural occurrence in response to changes in food sources, temperature, rainfall or light".
"The events are occasionally called reddish tides because the proliferations can turn the water reddish," the official noted. "Few algae outbreaks are toxic, with several kinds functioning as a key source of food for creatures in the oceanic food chain."
"The primary reason of reddish water in Tasmanian waters is the sea plant Noctiluca scintillans, which can produce glowing light shows at night."
Rising Rate Connected to Climate Change
Algae outbreaks are natural events but their rate has increased in recent years, partly due to global warming and contamination that join together to create food-loaded oceans primed for the fast proliferation of dinoflagellates.
Dinoflagellates are a marine plant that normally act as the ocean's detritus consumers. During a proliferation, there is a fast increase in their colonies that disturbs the healthy balance of ecosystems.
These phenomena have been likened to subsurface wildfires and can keep expanding as long as conditions are ripe. In severe cases, sensitive marine ecosystems can be devastated as sea creatures is eliminated or suffocated, providing more nutrients for the bloom.
Previous Devastating Outbreak in South Australia
A southern state not long ago dealt with a severe algal bloom along its southern coastline after a series of oceanic warm spells, which expanded across a vast area. The outbreak resulted in swimmers with sore eyes and severe coughing and may have eliminated up to 250,000 marine animals across hundreds of species, according to government calculations.
Scientist Assessment on the Tasmanian Event
An estuarine ecologist, who was involved in studying the start of that event said, based on pictures of the current situation, the most likely species involved was Noctiluca scintillans, a form of dinoflagellate also known as "marine shimmer".
"We have seen many of these blooms around the island of late," she remarked.
Coleman explained sea sparkle did not produce poisons like the type involved in that devastating event, but it does ingest small invertebrates and "numerous fish eggs", meaning aquatic creatures were in greatest danger.
"You usually see a proliferation of sea sparkle after a bloom of something else, or for example a fish reproduction," she said.
Demands for Investigation and Safety Concerns
A marine scientist, who gathered specimens of the rosy slime in Tasmania, said it looked like the possible outbreak had "grown significantly" and suggested the fish farming business was the probable cause, referring to like situations overseas.
"Therefore Tasmania needs to send a clear message here, the officials and the environmental agency need to respond to this. We need to study the examples we've collected and we need to inform the public here," she said.
The scientist stated she had worries for people's well-being after noticing a tingling sensation along her limbs and skin while being splashed with affected seawater.

An conservation group has documented lifeless animals and deceased marine life being found on the beach, with a prominent conservationist describing the situation as an "ecological crisis" and demanding the state premier to visit and "take control the reaction that officials must be doing".
"He needs to understand this is a crisis in the happening, commercially as well as environmentally."
Government Response
Talking with the media, the leader stated he was did not know of any relationships between the algal bloom and the aquaculture sector, stating expert examination was necessary before judgments could be drawn.
"We must make certain our aquatic environments are environmentally safe and long-lasting," he said.
"Our coastal assets across Tasmania are our treasures and we need to ensure the community and our industry can operate side-by-side to utilize our waterways efficiently and sustainably."
