Whenever a prominent honors show nears, there’s always a clamor to include of new categories to honor overlooked contributions and satisfy the spirits of enthusiasts with niche passions.
Another commentator has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification supporting my request is the most urgent and important of all. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and typically generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise for the industry of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute one unified medium.
To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.
Existing Game Classification System
Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications effectively encompass many game types, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.
This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Consider three of this year’s best games, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.
The Representation Problem
Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles launched regularly that have no home at major award shows, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.
- An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated completely that year
- Another imaginative release received no nominations during that ceremony
- A beloved organization game was overlooked recently
- Limited numbers of brain-teasers barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications
Importance of Logic Titles
These are often small games, yet the craft behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles count as most popular titles globally continuing this trend for many years.
The legendary block-stacking game competes with popular creative games for the title of highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, while interacting across multiple categories.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. It would be easy to populate a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.
To emphasize again, these include experiences that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the hard edge game development, developing some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay decades.
